The P is a diagnostic trouble code DTC for a fault found with the fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure regulator regulates how much fuel is delivered to the fuel injectors.

P0016 CHEVROLET - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor 'A'

The ECU controls the fuel pressure regulator and when a fault is detected the P code is set. This code will remain until the problem is resolved. A qualified mechanic will begin by hooking up an advanced level scan tool to find any codes stored in the ECM.

Any codes present will have its own freeze frame data that tells the mechanic under what circumstances the DTC was set, like RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, etc. Upon the code returning a visual inspection will be performed looking for any damage or leaks from the fuel lines, damaged fuel pressure regulator, or restricted lines.

The fuel pump output will be checked using a scan tool, as well as the fuel pressure regulator to check for proper operation.

Common mistakes are easy to make when performing diagnosis. They happen when steps are not followed in order or are skipped completely. Though a failing fuel pump is the most common cause proper tests must be performed on the fuel pump before it is condemned and replaced. If parts are replaced before they are tested it can be a waste of time and money and not fix the issue present. P may be an indication of a failing fuel pump.

Once the fuel pump fails the vehicle may stop running while driving or fail to start and run. The other symptoms such as poor vehicle running, misfire, lean, and rich conditions can cause the vehicle to become unsafe to drive. Two specific tools will be necessary to properly diagnose P First is a manual fuel pressure test kit.

This will allow for fuel pressure readings to be taken at the fuel rail. This is critical for accurate testing.

The other tool required is a professional level scan tool. Advanced scan tools allow live date to be seen and changes over time. Scan tools allow us to see things such as sensor data, fuel pressure, voltage, ohms and other important information. I've looked up all those codes and there is a ton of possible causes between them all. I assume the P and P are popping up just because it's running rough and that the real culprit lies in the PD and P codes. Fuel pressure sensor maybe? I'm hoping someone can identify a common theme among all of them and help me narrow this down. Any ideas? This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation.

P0089 CHEVROLET - Fuel Pressure 1 Control Performance

This mechanical pump is capable of upwards of 10, psi. Fuel pressure regulation is different than in low-pressure fuel injection systems, controlled electronically instead of mechanically. As the mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the cam shaft, it is constantly pumping. Depending on system design, there are a few ways to modulate fuel rail pressure.

On some return-less systems, fuel pressure is modulated by a variable-speed low-pressure supply pump controlled by the engine control module ECM. Some of these regulate how much fuel enters the pump itself, while others regulate how much fuel bleeds back to the tank, via the fuel-return line. The FPR may be mounted on the high-pressure fuel pump or on the fuel rail.

The ECM uses the fuel rail pressure sensor to continuously monitor fuel pressure. This is a generic DTC description, which means that automakers may use different descriptions. Here are a few examples:. Depending on year, make, and model, DTC P may have number of causes.

Here are some of the most common. Depending on vehicle type and failure mode, you may experience a number of undesirable conditions and drivability problems. You may not be able to start your vehicle at all, or it may start and run a few minutes and stall. If the engine runs, you may experience poor fuel economy, poor performance, lack of power, or rough idle.

If actual fuel pressure is too high, you will likely experience engine knocking, a rich condition with possible fuel trim DTCs, even black smoke from the exhaust. Because of the complexity of the high-pressure fuel system, you will need a scan tool with live data-streaming capabilities for the best chance of diagnosing this problem.

A high-pressure fuel pressure gauge would be helpful, but quite possibly unavailable outside of a shop environment. A DVOM digital volt-ohm meter will also be useful. Keep in mind that this guide will only give you some general strategies in diagnosing your problem. Specific diagnostic steps and verification data depend entirely on year, make, and model, which information can be found in a factory repair manual.

Remember Me? OldPM Thread Starter. Greetings, My Terrain basically died yesterday and I'm going to be getting it towed to the dealer tomorrow, but wanted to get an idea of what I might be in for. Then yesterday, I left the house for a quick errand in the morning, and the car stalled and started giving me the Engine Power Reduced and Stabilitrak System message in the DIC.

I limped home at 25 MPH with a couple more stalls. Then I took it to AutoZone to get the codes read. In addition to the P, it's giving the other three codes in the subject.

It took a while to even get it started at Autozone, and it stalled a bunch on the way home and wouldn't go over 25 MPH and I ended up pushing it down our street to the house. Anyone here have any ideas? The one I'm hoping for is the timing chain issue that's covered by themile warranty. I'm at miles so out of the regular and my extended warranty.

Also, I've put 2 quarts of oil in since my last oil change and I've only gone a bit over miles and it's at about halfway up the level thing at the end of the dipstick. I had them doing an oil consumption test after two oil changes ago and it wasn't using oil at all after 3 or 4 mile checks but I had been having to add a bunch of oil between changes.

I guess they'll have to do that again. I'm NOT impressed with this 4 cylinder engine. I wish I would have chosen the 6 when I bought it, but I was focused on gas mileage and didn't do any research like I should have.

Any ideas on what I might have to get fixed and a ballpark on cost? Let me know if I need to provide more info. Thanks, TowerDave. Quick Reply. Remove Advertisements. OldPM. JayTee is offline. I see your vehicle also was low on oil awhile ago? Waaay too long for the 2. There were notices, letters, and even a recall to shorten the oil change interval.

Who were you having do your oil changes?Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins. With the camshaft cover removed and the 1 cylinder at top dead center, make sure that the darkened chain links are lined up with the alignment marks on the exhaust and intake cam sprockets.

If a P is resetting without any engine performance concerns but the above information did not isolate a cause for the DTC, replace the Cam Phaser Actuator sprocket. The auto repair labor rates vary by location, your vehicle's make and model, and even your engine type. The magnetic field of the sensor is altered by a crankshaft mounted reluctor wheel that has seven machined slots, 6 of which are equally spaced 60 degrees apart.

The seventh slot is spaced 10 degrees after one of the 60 degree slots. The CKP sensor produces seven pulses for each revolution of the crankshaft. The pulse from the 10 degree slot is known as the sync pulse. The sync pulse is used to synchronize the coil firing sequence with the crankshaft position. The Camshaft Position CMP sensor is triggered by a notched reluctor wheel built into the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

The CMP sensor provides 6 signal pulses every camshaft revolution. Each notch, or feature of the reluctor wheel is of a different size for individual cylinder identification. This relationship is used to determine camshaft actuator position and control its phasing at the correct value. The PCM also uses this signal to identify the compression stroke of each cylinder, and for sequential fuel injection.

Repair Importance Level: 3. Why is the Engine Light ON? Home - About AutoCodes. Posted and Edit by AutoCodes.P is a very common trouble code.

It affects vehicles with variable valve timing VVT. This means that it has the same definition regardless of the make or model of the vehicle. It has the same definition for the Chevy Equinox as it does on any other vehicle. VVT changes the frequency and distribution of gases entering and exiting the combustion chamber. This is great for both power and fuel economy. If your Equinox has the P trouble code it will typically not pass the State emissions tests.

The Chevy Equinox utilizes camshaft actuators to change the valve lift depending on the RPM of the motor. This allows for a more efficient cam profile at any speed. When the timing is too far advanced. Camshaft Position Actuators change the lift of the camshaft up to 25 degrees. So, if you have low oil pressure or dirty oil, it can keep them from doing their job properly, and trigger P With P, the camshaft actuator is leaving the timing too far advanced, or there is a system performance issue not working right.

When the timing is too far advanced, it can really cause some issues with the motor. Here are some of the typical symptoms of P in the Chevy Equinox:.

When the timing is too far advanced Camshaft Position Actuators change the lift of the camshaft up to 25 degrees. Chevy Equinox P Symptoms When the timing is too far advanced, it can really cause some issues with the motor. Decreased Gas Mileage — Now the engine can no longer adjust its cam timing on the fly, it will no longer be able to produce optimal combustion which equals poor economy.

Lost Power — The engine will not be able to produce as much power. This is because the cam profile will not allow it run a performance power curve when you need more power. Tough to Start Motor — With the timing too far advanced, it is going to be difficult to start the motor, especially when it is warm.

The wiring harness to the intake camshaft position sensor may also develop a poor connection.
